Ruchi Jain

Ruchi Jain, Dr. Humar’s favorite grandchild, recently graduated from the Ivey School of Business, University of Western Ontario with Honours Distinction. She currently works as a Financial Analyst at PepsiCo in Toronto, Ontario. Throughout the years, Ruchi has held several leadership positions including President of Western’s Indo-Canadian Students’ Association. Besides bugging her grandparents, in her spare time, she enjoys being outdoors, Indian classical and Bollywood dancing, and learning new skills.

Dr. Abhinav Humar

Dr. Abhinav Humar, son of Dr. Jagmohan Humar, is the Chief of Transplantation program at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre, Clinical Director of the Thomas E. Starzal Transplantation Institute, and Professor in the Department of Surgery at University of Pittsburgh Medical School. He specializes in the transplantation of the kidney, liver, pancreas, and bowel and is considered a leading surgeon in live liver transplant. In fact, he has successfully carried out over 1000 live kidney liver transplants. He also has a strong research record in related fields, is widely published, and is the lead author of an authoritative book entitled Atlas of Organ Transplantation, now in its second edition. Dr. Humar was selected as Top Doctor in Minneapolis-St Paul Magazine during 2005-2008, and by Pittsburgh Magazine during 2011-2020. Based on a survey of the citizens of Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Next Magazine selected him as one of 25 that the city could not do without.

Dr. Deepali Kumar

Dr. Deepali Humar is the daughter-in-law of Dr. Jagmohan Humar, wife of Dr. Atul Humar, and mother of three teenagers.  She is a specialist in transplant medicine and infectious diseases. She is currently practicing at the Toronto General Hospital working within the Transplant Program. She is also a full professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto. Dr. Humar is very active in the research area and has developed guidelines for vaccination in transplant patients that are used around the world. She supervises graduate students and post-doctoral fellows and is on the editorial board of three medical journals. She has held many leadership positions within the transplant physician community, both nationally and internationally. She has previously served as an advisor on vaccines to the Public Health Agency of Canada and is currently playing an important role in guiding the Ontario government about COVID vaccine strategies for patients with weakened immune systems.

Dr. Patrick Selvadurai

Dr. A.P.S. Selvadurai is currently William Scott Professor and Distinguished James McGill Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering and Applied Mechanics at McGill University. His research interests are in applied mechanics, geomechanics, and applied mathematics. He has published over 317 journal papers and 330 conference papers. He has also edited or co-edited 9 books and 7 Special Issues of International Journals and serves on the Editorial Boards of nine leading International Journals. Dr. Selvadurai has received numerous awards for his work and is a Fellow of several institutions the most notable being the Canadian Academy of Engineering and the Royal Society of Canada. In 2012 he was awarded the degree of Docteur Honoris Causa by the Institut Polytechnique de Grenoble, France. He has served as visiting professor at 9 leading educational institutes across the world. From 1975 to 1992 he was a colleague of Dr. Humar at Carleton.

Dr. Rafik Goubran

Rafik Goubran is currently Vice-President (Research and International) at Carleton University in Ottawa. Prior to this, he served as the dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Design at Carleton for almost a decade. Dr. Goubran’s research interests include Digital Signal Processing and its applications in biomedical engineering and audio processing.  Over the years Dr. Goubran has supervised many Ph.D. and Master’s students and has co-authored 10 patents.
He has held an impressive number of review panel appointments, board positions, and memberships with such institutions as the Global Engineering Deans Council, the Council of Ontario Deans of Engineering, the Canada Foundation for Innovation, Networks of Centres of Excellence of Canada, the Bruyère Research Institute, and the National Medical Devices Alliance. Dr. Goubran is a Fellow of the IEEE and a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering.

Dr. Vinod Kumar

Dr. Vinod Kumar joined Carleton University in 1984 and is currently a Professor in the University’s Eric Sprott School of Business. From 1995 to 2005 he served as the Director of the School. During his tenure as Director, the School raised close to $13 million and started offering Canada’s first ever offshore degree programs in India, China, and Iran. As a research scholar in Supply Chain Management, he has published over 400 papers in refereed journals and conference proceedings, authored 20 research books and monographs and contributed chapters in another 43 books. He has been invited to be a keynote at 10 different conferences across the world. He has served on the editorial boards of nine international journals. His honors include several Best Paper Awards at conferences, Best Professor in Supply Chain Management awarded at the World Education Congress, 2012, and several Research Achievement awards at Carleton.

Dr. Anne Vallely

Dr. Vallely is an Associate Professor with the Department of Classics & Religious Studies, University of Ottawa. She is an Anthropologist of South Asian Religion, with a focus on the Jain tradition. She is one of the founding members of the University of Ottawa’s Academy for Mindfulness and Contemplative Studies. She is involved in the creation of two new academic units at uOttawa: “Contemplative Studies” and “Animal Studies”. Dr. Vallely’s research interests focus on issues around death, loss, and grief within the Jain tradition in India, as well as on the spirituality of dying in a comparative framework. She is presently initiating a qualitative study to explore psychedelic / entheogenic facilitated mystical-type experiences and discern their similarities to and differences from naturally occurring mystical states.

Dr. Paul Van Geel

Dr. Van Geel is a Professor of Environmental Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Carleton University and is past Chair of the Department. His research interests include hydrogeology and solid waste management, flow and transport in the saturated and unsaturated zone, waste Management issues including optimization of bioreactor landfills operating in northern climates, and waste-to-energy alternatives. Dr. Van Geel currently serves as the Chair of the Independent Geoscience Advisory Group for the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC). The mandate of the group is to review and provide advice related to the research activities of the CNSC and the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) in support of a potential future deep geological repository for the long-term management of high-level nuclear waste.

Dr. Benoit-Antoine Bacon

Dr. Bacon started his five-year mandate as President of Carleton University on July 1, 2018. He joined Carleton from Queen’s University where he served as Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic). He previously served as Provost and Vice-President (Academic Affairs) at Concordia University. Dr. Bacon holds a Ph.D. in neuropsychology from the University of Montreal. His research in the field of cognitive neuroscience focuses on the links between brain activity and perception in the visual and auditory systems, as well as on multisensory integration. He remains associated with the Montreal-based Neuropsychology and Cognition Research Center (CERN), which is funded by the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Santé (FRQS).

Dr. Roseann O’Reilly Runte, CM 

Dr. Runte is President and CEO of the Canada Foundation for Innovation. Previous to that, she was the President and Vice-Chancellor of Carleton University. She was also the president of Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, and has previously served as president of Victoria University, principal of Glendon College, and president of l’Université Sainte-Anne.  Additionally, she has received honorary degrees from Acadia University, Memorial University of Newfoundland, Vasile Goldiș Western University of Arad, and the West University of Timișoara. Aside from her achievements in academia, she has served as President of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO and on the boards of EXPO 2000, the United Way and the Club of Rome.  She currently chairs the Board of Fulbright Canada-U.S. and is a member of the executive committee of the World University Service of Canada. She is a member of both the European and the World Academies of Arts and Sciences. While Dr. Runte is acclaimed for her writing in poetry, she is also noted for her works on cultural studies, with emphasis on the role of women in society. Dr. Runte has been awarded the Order of Canada, the French Order of Merit, fellowship in the Royal Society, the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal, the Palmes Académiques, and a prize from the Académie française.

Mr. Chandra Arya, MP

Chandra Arya, MP is a Canadian Liberal politician, who was elected to represent the riding of Nepean in the House of Commons of Canada in the 2015 federal election and subsequently re-elected in the 2019 federal election. He currently serves as a member of the Standing Committee on International Trade (CIIT). Along with Mayor Jim Watson, Mr. Arya was on the board of Invest Ottawa – the economic development agency of the City of Ottawa – promoting a knowledge-based economy in Ottawa. He also served as a board member of Unity Non-Profit Housing Corporation Ottawa and was the Vice President of Ottawa Community Immigrants Services Organization. Mr. Arya was the Chair of Indo-Canada Ottawa Business Chamber and founder-director of Federation of Canadian Brazilian Businesses.

Mr. Ajay Bisaria

Ajay Bisaria has been the High Commissioner of India to Canada from March 1,  2020. He is a career diplomat who joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1987. Prior to joining the diplomatic service, Mr. Bisaria worked briefly with the American Express Bank and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), in Delhi. After training at the Foreign Service Institute in New Delhi, Ajay Bisaria was posted at the Indian Embassy in Moscow (1988–1991). He served as Under Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs on the East Europe desk (1991 – 92) when India was engaged in building new relationships with the post-Soviet countries. He then moved to the Ministry of Commerce (1992-95). He was posted as First Secretary in the Indian Embassy in Berlin (1995–1999). Ajay Bisaria was appointed Private Secretary to the Prime Minister of India in 1999 and served in this capacity till 2004. Mr. Bisaria was posted to the World Bank in Washington D.C. as Advisor to the Executive Director for South Asia (2004–2008). In 2009, Bisaria moved to Delhi to serve as Joint Secretary (Eurasia) in the Ministry of External Affairs (2009–2014). He was India’s Ambassador to Poland, based in Warsaw, with concurrent accreditation to Lithuania from January 2015 to November 2017. From December 2017 to February 2020, Ajay Bisaria served as the High Commissioner of India to Pakistan.
